message from the managing director

Welcome to CERMAS – Georgia State University’s Center for Enterprise Risk Management and Assurance Services. CERMAS is a university-based research and education center dedicated to the development and dissemination of an integrated body of knowledge in the identification, measurement, evaluation, control, and monitoring of risks on an enterprise-wide basis.

The first concepts of Enterprise Risk Management stretch back to the early 90's. At that time the role of risk management in corporations started to fundamentally change. Over the next decade a growing number of companies redesigned the risk management function, established Chief Risk Officer (CRO) positions, and institutionalized risk oversight processes.

This evolution of risk management is an ongoing process. It is our vision that CERMAS provide a central reference point and an evolving community you can turn to in order to obtain the best thinking on how to identify, address, and manage risk related problems.

The founding members of CERMAS conceived of a center with a global orientation that would bring a unique, integrated approach to dealing with an organization's risks on an enterprise-wide basis. The core focus is on sponsoring leading-edge research and providing practical and useful solutions practitioners can implement and apply in their own organizations. The central idea is to combine the best that a well-regarded university has to offer with the insights and needs of skilled practitioners to create a 'virtuous circle' that continually adds to and enhances the overall effectiveness and value of the center.
